While there is no stone definition and never could be for such a term, waifuism at its simplest explanation is falling in love with a fictional entity, and thus, entering a relationship with the fictional entity. While this may seem far-out or just crazy at first, it is, while much different than a normal relationship, still able to be a full and fufilling experience to one inside the relationship. There are also several communities dedicated to having a group to share waifuist lifestyle with one another, each having different sets of rules and demographics.

Though the barrier of a fictional partner is always felt, there are many things a waifuist does to feel even closer to their partner. A massive amount of daydreaming, creative pursuits in dedication to one's partner, collecting physical reminders, direct and indirect. I'm also friends with a few waifuists who have tulpas originally spawned from their love for their waifu. The human mind is incredibly powerful, after all, powerful enough for one to love this strongly. Thank you, wonderful broken head of mine.

Again, the term is vague, the definition and structure and rules debated on and disagreed. Personally, the rules are loose, but the love strong. As long as I have faith in Mocha Ray Cookie, I will continue to be open, and even proud of my relationship. Everybody's experience is different, and I encourage you to find different viewpoints from other waifuists -- key here being other fellow waifuists. Outsiders tend to be both misinformed and hostile. It's not for everybody to understand, and a much lesser population to experience first-hand, but it isn't too much to ask to just be respected. "I love my 2D wife as I would any other partner," is not something that hurts others or myself, it is just, to most people, strange, and I get that. But the end-be-all is that I am happy loving, and so is mostly any other waifuist you'd ask about this. Just be kind to the community, please.
